Herbs, perennial, bulbiferous. Bulbs subglobose to ovoid; tunic brown to black brown. Leaves appearing after anthesis, ligulate. Flowering stem (scape) erect, simple, solid. Umbel terminal, 4-8-flowered; spathe bracts 2, membranous. Perianth white, creamy, yellow, gold, pink or bright red, funnelform; lobes oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic, margin sometimes undulate; ring of 6 perianth scales or fimbriae sometimes present at throat of perianth tube. Stamens inserted at throat of perianth tube; filaments filiform; anthers versatile. Carpels 3, syncarpous, ovary inferior, 3-locular, each locule with few ovules; style slender; stigma capitate, very small. Fruit a capsule, 3-valved, usually 3-angled, loculicidal. Seeds black, subglobose.

Perennial herbs, bulbiferous, bulbs ovoid, ca. 5 cm in diameter. Leaves appearing in autumn, ensiform, 60-76 cm x 2-3.5 cm, midvein pale, base and apex gradually tapering. Scape appears on plant in leafless condition Leaves appear after flowering is over (flowers hysteranthous). Scape 55-82 cm long, erect, simple, solid; terete-flat. Inflorescence an umbel at top of scape with 4-6 flowers. Spathe bracts 2 (enclosing young flowers), lanceolate, green, membranous, unequal, 7-8 cm x 1.4-1.7 cm. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, epigynous, trimerous, large, bright yellow; pedicels short, up to 2 cm long; flower bracts linear, pale green, up to 7 cm long. Tepals 6, connate at base; tube short, 1.2- 1.5 cm long; lobes ca. 6 cm x 0.4-1 cm, oblanceolate, strongly recurved, abaxially with a pale green midvein, many parallel veins in midvein region, margin hyaline and strongly undulate, membranous, without prominent veins. Stamens 6, inserted at throat of perianth tube, long exserted; filaments 7-12 cm long, yellow; anthers ca. 7 mm long, dorsifixed. Ovary inferior, broadly ovate, ca. 6 mm x 5 mm, 3-locular, few ovules (2-5) per loculus; ovules inserted on axis at the base of ovary; style slender, longer than stamens, 10-12.5 cm long, rose red at apex; stigma capitate, very small.

Fruit a capsule, 3-angled, 3-valved, loculicidal. Seeds few, black, subglobose, ca. 0.7 cm in diameter. (Fruits not observed)
