Evergreen shrubs, 2-3 m tall. Young shoots sparingly pubescent. Leaves alternate, crowded near apex, simple, bronze when young and brownish on underside, petiolate, petiole 1-4.5 cm long, pubescent; leaf blade obovate to oblanceolate or subpanduriform, 6-13 cm x 1.5-6.5 cm, acutely cuspidate-acuminate, narrowed to the base, entire except at base which may be glandular-denticulate, margin sometimes sparingly ciliate, 3-10-veined at base, veins not very prominent. Stipules subulate, ca. 1 mm long. Inflorescence subterminal, subcorymbiform, 8-26 cm long with lower clear unbranched 5-11 cm long peduncle; dichotomously cymose, usually with a solitary female flower terminating each major axis and the lateral cymules male; bracts linear-lanceolate, 2-10 mm long, subentire. Flowers scarlet, ca. 2.5 cm across, pedicellate, pedicels up to 6 mm long. Male flowers: Calyx ca. 4 mm long, campanulate, sepals connate at base, calyx lobes 5, ca. 2 mm x 1 mm, ovate-triangular or oblong-ovate, subacute or obtuse, entire, red. Petals 5, free, oblanceolate, 10-16 mm x 4-8 mm, apex rounded or emarginate, scarlet, villous adaxially at base, scarlet. Disc annular, nectary extrastaminate, disc glands 5, free, rounded. Stamens 10, in 2 whorls, connate basally to most length, 5 outer ca. 5 mm long, the 5 inner ca. 1 cm long, anthers 2 mm long, dehiscence longitudinal. Female flowers: Calyx and corolla +/- similar as in male flowers. Disc glands free, flattened. Ovary ovoid, ca. 2 mm x 1.5 mm; styles 3, ca. 3 mm long, connate basally, deeply bifid. Fruit rounded-trigonous, ca. 1 cm x 1 cm, septicidally and loculicidally dehiscent. Seeds ovoid-ellipsoid, ca. 8-9 mm x 5 mm, buff-colored, mottled, blackish-brown, caruncle bifid, ca. 2 mm wide.
