An erect, glabrous shrub or small tree, up to 3 m, sometimes scandent, deciduous or evergreen; branches angular, green. Leaves alternate, simple or imparipinnately compound, very variable in size, 5-7(-15) cm long. Simple leaves: Petiole 0.4-3 cm long, adaxially channelled; leaf blade 1.8-6.5 cm x 1.8-4.2 cm; margin entire, base cuneate, rounded, cordate or unequal-sided, apex acute, acuminate, mucronate. Imparipinnate leaves: Rachis, petiole and petiolule adaxially channelled; petiole 0.5-2.3 cm long; petiolules 0.4 mm long; leaflets 3-9, usually 5, very variable in size: terminal leaflet petiolulate, large, 0.6-6.8 cm x 0.2-3.2 cm (up to 10 cm in vigorous and cultivated plants), dark green above and paler below, leathery, elliptic, ovate to lanceolate, glabrous; the lateral leaflets sessile, subsessile or petiolulate, smaller, 0.2-6 cm x 0.2-2.8 cm, margin entire, base rounded or cuneate, apex acute, acuminate or obtuse, mucronate; 2-4 primary veins on each side of midrib in all leaflets. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, hypogynous, yellow, cymes in terminal umbels, corymbs or panicles, 1-10(-15) flowered; bracts linear, 2-4 mm long; pedicels 0.5-1.5 cm long. Calyx 2.5-3.7 cm long, persistent; tube ca. 3 mm long; teeth 5, 1-1.5 mm long, half as long as tube or less, deltate to subulate. Corolla nearly funnelform, yellow, 1.5-2.5 cm across; tube 0.8-1.6 cm long; lobes 5, subequal, ca. 1.2-0.7 cm, broadly ovate or orbicular, obtuse, reflexed. Stamens 2, slightly exserted or included, inserted in corolla tube near throat; filaments 3-3.5 mm long; anthers ca. 6 mm long, oblong-ovate, apiculate, slightly exserted, dehiscence longitudinal, introrse. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary ca. 2 mm x 2 mm, bilocular with 2 ovules per loculus; style 6-7 mm long, slender; stigma slightly exserted, bilobed, ca. 5 mm long.

Berry simple or didymous, globular or ellipsoid, 6-11 mm x 4-10 mm, 4-seeded. (Fruits not observed)
